In Response to
the Dublin City Council's Dog Law
- July 2007
Dublin City Council has recently
banned 11 breeds of dog (including
Rottweilers, Bull Terriers and
German Shepherds) from all their
properties, including houses,
flats and estates.
Existing tenants are being given
a chance to rehome their animals,
but if alternative accommodation
can't be found, then the dogs will
be destroyed.
It also seems likely that these
breeds will be banned from public
parks - which means dog owners
living in private accommodation
will also be affected.
A petition to reverse the decision
has been organised by Irish lobbying
group ANVIL (Animals Need
a Voice in Legislation).

My Initial Response
In response to the Dublin Dog Law,
my thoughts on this genocide,
echo despicable similarities
to the holocaust. I have created
the following poem, inspired
by "First They Came" (Pastor
Martin Niemöller [1892–1984]),
to remind us all of how these
*laws* can so easily spread out
of hand.
First They Came
First they
came for the Bull Terriers,
and I did not speak
out,
because I did not have
a Bull Terrier.
Then they
came for the Rottweilers,
and I did not speak
out,
because I did not have
a Rottweiler.
Then they
came for the Dobermans,
and I did not speak
out,
because I did not have
a Doberman.
Then they
came for the Ridgebacks,
and I did not speak
out,
because I did not have
a Rhodesian Ridgeback.
Then they
came for the Bull Mastiffs,
and I did not speak
out,
because I did not have
a Bull Mastiff.
Then they
came for the Akitas, and
I did not speak out,
because I did not have
an Akita.
Then they
came for the German Shepherds,
and I did not speak
out,
because I did not have
a German Shepherd.
When they
came for my dog, there
was no one left to speak
out.
